How to perform a Self-Verification Test

There are two options to perform a self-verification test. Choose one below.

Have the 3M LeadCheck swab

Identification of the type of material used for service lines and in home plumbing can be done using the EPA approved at home 3M LeadCheck Swab.

Identify the test area

Perform the following steps

Clean

Clean the service line with a scotch pad or wet cloth to remove any dirt or dust that may have accumulated.

Crush

Clean the service line with a scotch pad or wet cloth to remove any dirt or dust that may have accumulated.

Shake and Squeeze

Clean the service line with a scotch pad or wet cloth to remove any dirt or dust that may have accumulated.

Rub

Clean the service line with a scotch pad or wet cloth to remove any dirt or dust that may have accumulated.

Have a magnet and a penny or a key

Identification of the type of material used for service lines and in home plumbing can be done using a magnet and a penny. Some new homes may have plastic plumbing which is often cream-colored or white.

Identify the test area

Perform the following steps

Locate water meter

The service line usually enters the basement and connects to the meter.

Hold a magnet to the pipe

Hold magnet on upstream side and close to the water meter

Scratch the pipe

Use a key or coin to scratch the pipe.
